The goal of the Lithuanian Academic Library Network (LABT) is to create Lithuanian's academic virtual library through the automation
of libraries, unification of search and access to information sources and virtual services. LABT currently links together libraries of 16 universities,
18 colleges, 39 research institutions of science and The Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences
and as such represents Lithuanian academic library consortia. Well known Aleph
(Ex Libris Ltd.) library automation software was adopted and implemented in all LABT members libraries.
The Lithuanian Academic Libraries Directors Association (LABA) and
Kaunas University of Technology are LABT project coordinators and main driving force. The primary task
for the near future is the extension of LABT databases up to full text data bases (e-resources). In that case our libraries will become real e-libraries
where e-documents will be available for individuals (not only traditional library services and e-catalog).
MetaLib and SFX (Ex
Libris Ltd.) software will be installed and adopted this year and will used as single central portal for search and information retrieval.
Main aims
Automation of libraries by uniting them into a solid network Rendering of virtual services Accumulation of e-resource bases
Creation of a solid search system with unified user interface Ensuring of quality links between library e-catalogs and e-resources
Lithuanian Virtual Library
Virtual library is e-libraries, telecommunication facilities and unified user interface. It includes all possible e-library levels
from a home library to the global sources of information. Setting up of the Lithuanian Virtual Library is based on such software products as
Aleph, Primo,
MetaLib and SFX.
